Bar/Bat Mitzvah at Beth Shalom: A Celebration of Growth and Community
A Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a pivotal milestone – a blending of tradition, study, and communal joy. At Beth Shalom, we guide families through every step, ensuring the experience is personal, memorable, and truly meaningful.
Preparation & Learning
We provide a comprehensive program that covers Torah reading, Haftorah chanting, prayer fluency, and speech writing. Students work closely with clergy, tutors, and educators who tailor lessons to individual needs and learning styles. We encourage each child to explore their own Jewish identity, ask tough questions, and build confidence on the bimah.
Family & Community Involvement
Workshops & Family Sessions – Join your child in learning about the mitzvot, traditions, and social responsibilities of becoming a Jewish adult.
Tikkun Olam Projects – We encourage Bar/Bat Mitzvah students to undertake a service project that resonates with their passions, fostering a sense of ethical responsibility.
Community Celebration – The Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony is not just about the individual; it’s about the entire congregation celebrating the future of our people and traditions.
Who is eligible?
Any Jewish person who has reached the age of eligibility (13 years for boys, 12 years for girls) according to the Jewish calendar, and who is a congregational member or the son or daughter of a congregational member is eligible for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony at Beth Shalom.
How to select a date?
Three years before your child’s 13th birthday (boys) or 12th birthday (girls), you may select a date. Requests must be submitted, in writing, to the synagogue office not earlier than 36 months prior to the date desired. Forms are available in the synagogue office, can be found in the B’nai Mitzvah handbook or click here for the online form. The usual date for the B’nai Mitzvah is the first Sabbath following the candidate’s birthdate on the Jewish calendar. The Rabbi and office will confirm eligibility.
Our staff will offer guidance on the timeline, including:
Assigning Torah/Haftorah portions
Rehearsal schedules
Facility and event space details
Optional tutoring or special accommodations
When your child steps onto the bimah, they’re stepping into a new chapter of Jewish life. Let us share in your family’s joy as you commemorate this sacred moment together.
