What is Chevra Kadisha?
A Chevra Kadisha is an organization made up of Jewish men and women who make sure that the bodies of deceased Jews are prepared for burial according to Jewish law, tradition, and custom. They are responsible for cleansing and dressing the body for burial. In English this organization is known as a burial society. Throughout our history, each Jewish community throughout the world has established a Chevra Kadisha – a holy society- whose function was to ensure a dignified treatment of the Jewish people. This task is considered the ultimate act of kindness as a dead person can never repay this kindness. This act is also known as chesed shel emet, “a good deed of truth.”
"The highest act of gemilut chesed (deeds of kindness) is done for the deceased."
