Message from Friday. March 13, 2020

As we reported to you all at the beginning of the week, your Staff and Board continue to actively monitor the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation both locally and nationally.  Out of an abundance of caution, we are proactively activating precautionary measures at Beth Shalom to help us reduce the potential risk of transmission, while at the same time preserving the religious sanctity of who we are as a kehillah, a community.

To that end, effective immediately, we will be implementing the following actions and guidance until further notice:

  • Friday night, Saturday morning Shabbat services and Sunday morning minyan will all be held in the sanctuary as to allow everyone to spread out to maintain appropriate Social Distancing of at least 6 feet.
    • NOTE:  In the very near future we expect to offer live streaming of services from the sanctuary.
  • Shabbat morning Kiddush lunch will be suspended for the time-being so that we can reduce any potential exposure during food preparation, serving or close gatherings while eating.
  • All other Shabbat events (e.g.: Tot Shabbat, Mini-Minyan, Junior Congregation, etc.) will also be suspended at this time.
  • If possible, most other meetings and group sessions will be moved to an online, virtual environment (e.g.: Rabbi’s Melton Class, Torah Study, Board of Trustee Meetings, etc.).  Specifics around these and other virtual sessions will be forthcoming.
  • Beginning the week of March 16, 2020, our Religious School will move exclusively to our online, digital learning platform.  Those who are directly affected by this change will receive further guidance.
  • For the time-being, our Alefbet Preschool will close for all children and teachers beginning Monday, March 16, 2020.  Again, those who are impacted by this change will receive further guidance.

As we have previously stated, this outbreak of COVID-19 continues to spread and the situation is fluid.  We expect many changes and updates to occur quite rapidly, but we can inform you all of some immediate programs that we have unfortunately cancelled at this time:

  • Movie Night – Fiddler on the Roof – Sunday, March 15th @6:30 pm
  • 3rd Grade Family Shabbat Dinner @7:00 pm (services and the Siddur presentation are still on)
  • Trivia Night – Sunday, March 29th
  • Community Passover Seder – Thursday, April 9th
  • Thursday night Mah-Jongg
  • Boxing Lessons

We all have an obligation to our families and friends, so please stay home from services if you have a fever, shortness of breath, other flu-like symptoms, believe you have been exposed to this coronavirus or have traveled or are in close proximity of someone who has traveled in the last 14 days to an area designated by the CDC with community spread.

We are making these changes with your safety and well-being in mind and in the best interest of public health.  So, thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as we are committed to keeping you updated and informed as we reach new challenges and new norms in our daily lives.  Each of you give Beth Shalom our unique identity, and we are confident we will get through this together all while being strong and supportive for each other.

As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions, comments or concerns.

Shabbat Shalom and stay well,
