Tisha B’Av...Sunday, July 22nd
The upcoming fast day of Tisha B’Av (9th day of Av) is a day of mourning which commemorates the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, and concludes the 3 week period of mourning that began with the 17th day of Tammuz.
Our Erev Tisha B’Av service will take place this year on Saturday Evening, July 21st at 9:00pm. During the services we read from the Book of Lamentations by candlelight and sing songs recalling the glory of ancient Jerusalem. (Our Sunday Tisha B’Av morning minyan will begin at the usual time of 9:30 AM).
We will hold the Mincha service for Tisha B’Av on Sunday, July 22nd at 6:30 PM. Since Tallit and Tefillin are not worn in the morning (as a sign of distress over the destruction of Jerusalem), they are put on later in the day as a kind of reconciliation with God, as the fast day comes to a close. There is also a brief Torah reading service at that time.
So please remember to bring your Tallit and Tefillin for the Sunday evening minyan (as they are not worn in the morning during Shachrit).
